Rumor: Palm’s latest not the Gandolf, not the Centro, no its called the Treo 500
Posted on September 10th, 2007 in treo 500, treo 500v, Palm |
It is still set to be released on September 12th. Apparently this model and the Centro are two different models, regardless of the fact that they are nearly indistinguishable.
It is a bit wider than the Centro, making for slightly larger keys. It will be running Windows Mobile 6 on a 3G network.
That 3G network will be UMTS based and the phone won’t have a touchscreen. It will have a 240×320 screen and 150MB of memory. On top of that there is a 2MP cam and Bluetooth 2.0 with a microSD card slot. Initially the color scheme will be grey and white only. Other than that, all we really know is that the September 12th release is apparently only for Vodafone so far and that as it’s a Vodafone device its name will have the “v” appended onto it a la Palm Treo 500v.

Update: When it rains, it pours, Alles Windows Mobile has specs:
A reliable source informed us that Palm is to announce the new Treo 500v very soon. It will run Windows Mobile 6, will come with a 240×320 screen, has 150MB of memory and communication will be possible using UMTS. The expansion slot will be Micro-SD, just like the Treo 750. The dimensions are slighly less than the Treo 750: 61×110×16mm, and also the camera (2.0MP) and Bluetooth (v2.0) are slighly better. The device will be available in grey and white.

I certainly regret buying the Centro with AT&T. The teeny tiny buttons may work well for someone else, but it is the wrong device for me.The timing is within the 30 day trial, but AT&T will not accept the return. Of course they are 100% correct, they are AT&T.
I bought what I thought was a protective cell phone case. Well, it came apart as I was walking and dropped face down in a puddle of water. Yep, day 1 in the field.
But, here’s the good news! The Centro still works. However, I still don’t like it. So, I am stuck with a 2 year A T &T contract and a phone I don’t like. Of course I can buy one I do like–but I will have to buy from a 3rd party.
Can you believe that? Day 1, after buying a protective case, the case pops open and drops the centro in the water.
The Centro has many features I like, except the features I use most often, the small keys and the very flimsy side keys (on and off). If you are thinking of buying a Centro through A.T. & T think very hard about it. Experiment with all keys and features before committing. And for goodness sakes, that protective case is worthless! It actually caused the problem.
Also, if there are any REALTORS thinking of going this direction because your MLS can tie in the EKEY. Think again. Do you really want your key access, you phone and contacts bundled in one unit? Maybe its more convenient in one respect. But, if you lose or damage your unit it is hugely inconvenient to have it all in 1 bundle.
After this experience I immediately downgraded to the Active Key, so that if something worse happens to my phone at least I can keep working without visiting the MLS office for a back up key.
Thumbs down on Centro A T & T combo. Hey, Palm–what REALTORS need in the field is a waterproof unit and a case that does what its suppose to. Protect our phones, not endanger them.
