palm 500v picThe Palm Treo 500v is the first new Palm device in quite some time, and its targeted at the 24-35 year-old business/consumer range. Its available in two colors, grey and white, both featuring hints of silver as well.

The v on the end of the model number, in case to don’t recall, is in reference to its current Vodafone only availability, from whom you can get the device for free with certain contracts. Its not quite as attractive as say the iPhone, of which only today got to see one, but it’s a lot more sleek and smaller than its predecessors in the Treo line.

This phone sits at 110×61.5×16.5 millimeters and weighs in at a whopping 120 grams. Considering it has a fair sized screen and a full QWERTY keypad those dimensions and that weight aren’t too bad for a Treo.

The screen has a resolution of 320×240 pixels and is fairly easy to read regardless of the lighting conditions. However at night there is a pretty strong backlight and the keys are backlit as well.

Smack dab in the center of the phone there is a strip of metal that has what looks like 6 buttons and a D-Pad, the reviewer only mentioned 4 buttons and a D-Pad, the call end/answer buttons, the home button, and the back button. I swear it looks like there are two soft keys above the home and back buttons.

The keyboard is all there, but in order to make the phone as small as it is, and pack in a QWERTY keypad, they kind of had to make the keys a little smaller than usual. But it still works, just not recommended for those with considerably larger fingers. They also removed the audio off switch on the top of the device.

On the bottom of the phone there is a 2.5mm headphone jack, and a mini USB connector. On the left there are volume buttons and a dedicated IE launcher button. On the back there is a 2MP camera and the grill for the speakerphone. On the top there is also the power button.

The back was apparently a pain to remove, but once its removed it reveals the user-replaceable battery and the SIM card and miniSD card slots. Thats pretty much it for now.
